I've been lookin around for a set of long tube headers for my pony and I read reviews saying long tubes won't fit with and automatic tranny or without a aftermarket k member is this true

I'm not 100% on this but some LT headers will only will cars with a manual. I believe they have to be bent differently in order to fit so some companies only make then one way. If you go with LTs, you have to change your hpipe due to the difference in length between shorties and LTs. Also, you will either need to buy extenders for you O2 sensors or splice and extend yourself.

Would it be better to go with shorties which is better for a weekend driver but still reliable and fuel efficient

IMO, LTs are not worth it for your car. They don't really come beneficial till you upgrade cams and heads. I would stay with shorties.

A buddy of mine added bbk tuned length shortys 96-04 mustang gt on his 03 gt and he picked up and average of 13 hp and 13 tq throughtout the power land with peak gains of. 7 and 8 and in some low end areas before 4000 rpm gains of up to 17 rwhp. The shortys make much more low end tq and shift your power band a bit lower which is good if u have a x pipe which shifts it higher so now u have valences power in all rpm ranges. Long tubes don't make much more peak up maybe 10/10 but the average gains everywhere can be like 20-25 hp so the overall power band is much Stronger and thicker which means that every gear will pull harder at all rpms but in all honesty the peak gains are no more than 1-3% on a 300 hp car thats 3-9 hp difference for more than twice the cost not to mention a new mid pipe and install which is over twice the cost. 1000$ for a 1-3% gain

Do it right. Go with the long tubes. The install isnt too bad if you drop your k-member and you will love the way it sounds. Plus it will really open your car up. I noticed a considerable change at higher rpms (especially on the highway). And on top of that it allows your car to flow better and i actually picked up 1-2 mpg when i can keep my foot out of it lol ;)

I don't know why everyone says do it right and get long tubes as of doing shortys is somehow wrong or something I have witnessed the install and dyno results in person of a set of bbk shorty tuned headers for the 96-04 mustang gt and they gave considerable gains of average 13 rwhp and 13 rwtq like I said before the peak number were about 7 and 8 but it make the Low end power much better and in some places under 4000 a gain of up to 17 rwhp that is really good for shortys. Yes long tubes make more power on average 20-25 in both hp and tq but in peak numbers it's almost the same about 12 and 12 but the gains with long tubes are seen in the upper rpm ranger over. 4000 rpm where most people don't drive much where shorts give u power down low where you spend most of your driving. Also with long tubes you have to buy a new short mod pipe another 200$ and the headers themselves 500 or more. Like I said over 1000$ for like a 3% difference on a 300 hp car. Unless u are a dedicated track car and want all the power you can get shortys will be just fine and make a nice gain you can feel for less than half the price.

Lol yea that's yOur opinion I've seen it first hand the gains that they can provide so I know that the bashing on them is totally off base and only made by people who haven't seen it in person or have jus heard from others that they are pointless. It's true I dont have them done on my car and I'd prefer long tubes as well I mean who wouldn't but I don't have 1000$ to set them up cause I'd need a new mid pipe and buy the headers compared to just buying shorties and installing them. For only a few more hp not sure if it's worth it for a grand I rather get cams installed or get a port and polish job on my heads and gain over 30 rwhp everywhere not just up top. A nice set of comp xe270s with beehive springs and the usual bolt ons will get you to 300 rwhp na. Throw a port and polish job and 325-330 is possible. Now after all that cash you prolly could of pieced together a used supercharger and gotten to 350 plus but there is something to be said about a monster na 4.6 making some nice power everyone and thier mom had suoerchargers good to be different sometimes.

Yes it can be expensive if you buy it all new but if you shop around you can get deals like you wouldn't believe. I got a set of polished Hedman longtubes and a shorty Mac o/r prochamber for just $400. That's less than a set of shorties and more gain. I'll take long tubes every day
