Had a 79 Mustang and sold it many years ago. I would like to track it down now. I do have the VIN number, but I don't really know what to do. The BMV is no help at all. The "search for VIN Numbers on line" only goes back to cars 1981 and newer. Any suggestions?? Only other thing I can think of is to hire a private detective.....

Don't give up, I found a car I owned 40 years ago on craigslist L.A.

I also parted out a 79 Mustang race car a few years back, what city are you near.?

Start with the person you sold it to. If that person is not available, talk to that person's relatives or friends. Then, keep it going through the same process with succeeding owners. It could very well have been junked and than compacted in a junkyard. Then, you would be out of luck.
That happened to me once. I traced the car through 2 owners and discovered it had been totally wrecked in one year since I owned it.
