If your family is not comfortable in your S197 all the same short comings exist in the S550 in regards to the back seat. I am 6' even and with the driver's seat adjusted for me I have a hard time squeezing my arm between the back of the front and leading edge of the back seat. That being said my 8 and 6 year old grand daughters love riding in grampa's Mustang. They sit on a booster seat with there feet on the seat. Not sure how they would be after and hours ride. None of my dogs are happy in the back of the Mustang, they can't see out.
For a long distance cruiser for the wife and I my 17 Ecoboost Mustang is great. The ride is smooth (even with the Performance Package), quiet and the trunk is big enough to easily swallow luggage for a week or more trip, plus the rear seat backs fold if I need more room.
Keep in mind if you want all the latest tech in a GT you are talking a sticker price in the mid $40k range and a trade in value for your 14 that is likely going to be less than $10k.
I have been toying with the idea of trading the Mustang for a Charger GT. The GT gets you the body work of the SRT versions with a v6 and all wheel drive. But for me it makes more sense to trade my wife's compact sedan for an SUV with more room for the grand kids. I still have a beater 4x4 pickup to use on bad weather days.
