It's always in 2nd gear but when I let go of clutch and give gas the transmission internals hit the shifter and I can hear it. It's in 2nd, 3rd, 4th. What could this be? Bushing? I've got an MGW shifter. This also occurred with a Barton shifter and 2 post bracket. Does have low audible clunking sounds in all gear except higher gears.

Shifter never grinds. Quiet smooth shifts right into the gates. Royal Purple fluid.

Not sure how the transmission internals can hit the shifter since the shifter is external?

You could be hearing your driveshaft, a loose bolt on the shifter, a bushing.... hard to tell. Do you only hear it when releasing the clutch? If you get the car in gear, let the rpms drop, and punch it does it still clunk even when you aren't touching the clutch?
A video might help
