I own a 1967 Ford Mustang coupe with a 289 4bbl carb, 4 speed manual trans (to answer your first question, no, none of it is original equipment). I plan on, overtime, picking up an engine block and building up a larger engine for it. I don't want to have to modify the engine bay or shock towers, so I was thinking of going no larger than a 390. I don't want to build it up to be a racer, and I want to keep it clean looking, so no power bulge in the hood or anything of that matter. I am wondering if it's possible, either in my 289, or a different engine I build (302, 351 or 390) to get a large enough cam to make it sound like the "Shelby" in the remake of "Gone in 60 Seconds." I know that sounds like a dumb question from a non-car guy. But I assure that I am not a moron that knows nothing about my cars who only wants it to sound good while having no power. I want the car to be quick, as it already is with a 289, but I just love the sound of a bigger cam that opens slower. I am restoring this car and have worked at dealerships/garages for 5 years now, so I'm not an idiot. It currently has dual exhaust with no H or X-pipe, its true all the way back. It already sounds amazing, I just like the sound of a bigger cam. So I am just wondering if there is anything I can do to a 289 to make is sound more like Eleanor, or if it's possible in an engine that is less than 400 c.i. Thanks!!!

To get the sound you are looking for goto the link below, they can hook you up with the right cam. you will also need headers and stay away from the x, or h pipe. you want that off balanced sound coming out the exhaust.

make sure you get a cam with clearance of your heads. i dont know how many times people want a HUGE cam and put it in smaller heads and next thing you know they need all new heads
