It's not hurting anything to change early, plus he's not wasting more than $50 for an entire year. I don't trust 10k intervals. The oils viscosity may last that long but dirt and grime are still present. The factory recommend intervals are established for their profit. By having longer oil change intervals it lowers the cost of ownership and helps sells cars. Oil technology has improved greatly but I rather change my oil twice a year at 3.5k and hopefully have a cleaner engine.
