On a 1988 mustang gt do you have to drop the transmission to change speedometer gears?

I recently bought a 1988 mustang gt and the speedometer was not working. I inspected the cable and it was melted by the headers. Probably been that way awhile. I installed the new cable with no problems but speedometer still does not work. I had the speedometer itself checked out and it works. I am assuming that when the cable melted the sudden stop maybe ruined the gears in the transmission. How hard is it to fix this problem and do i need to drop the transmission?

No. Where the speedo cable plugs into the side of the transmission inside is the gear. It may be held in with a clip. Take the plastic gear out and it will have a specific color based on the rear end gearing. You could call a transmission shop that works on manuals or your local Ford dealer and they can get you a new one for not much money. i would go with the Ford part if you can as aftermarket quality is sometimes not as good. Good luck.

Nope. You might have to jack one side up a bit, if the car sits low, but that's it. Manual or automatic ???
