The scanners let you know when they are using their radar, meaning by the time your scanner goes off they already know how fast you're going. My advice is save money and slow down.

Ya know everyone says this, and everyone that says this I'm guessing has never owned a decent laser detector...I used to own a decent one and man that saved my a$$ more times than I could count..cops around here like to hide in between trees in the median so you don't see them till you pass, many many times with my old scanner id be speeding about 10 over the limit and beep beep beep it goes, slow down to the limit and boom passed the cop sitting in between the trees on the median..I've read and heard multiple people bashing these laser/radar detectors, but I know for a fact some do save your a$$ at times...I got rid of mine for 1 reason, I felt like I drove way more aggressively with it, got a bit comfortable speeding in certain areas, that had to stop....safety first, I mean I could give a **** about my safety when I'm driving but I do care about millions of families with little children in cars all day, couldn't live with myself if I knew I was driving like an ahole and hit a family...accident is an accident, accident is not an accident if your speeding.

I ride with a police scanner all the time a valentine at that. However to be truthfully honest it doesn't help me since i have it really for decoration. I dont speed i stay about 5 over the limit tops really. I just cruise and enjoy the car. If im late it saves my rear but even then im only 10 over while keeping half a car between me and the one im about to pass. Its really not worth investing in it its just much better to take it slow and controlled like nj said. Not worth risking your hide or others. If you wanna speed hit the track cause imo its safer to hit a wall in the track than hit a car with a family kill a kid and live with that in your consciousness for the rest of your life cause you loved driving your stang fast. Also you can kiss the stang bye bye if you wreck it and was it all worth it in the end? I would say no. Just my opinion

to be honest i haven't run a scanner in about 5 years..i use to own a valentine...and i agree it just lets you know when they know you're speeding...now whether they care or not to pull you over for it that depends on what they are doing.

my reason i don't run one now is because to be honest i sped way more having one then now. now that i don't know when i'm being scanned i keep to the speed limit (usually 4-5 over)...when i had it i sped all the time though lol so now i keep slower and happier. granted i did just have a speeding ticket last month, but that was more of a lapse of judgement then me wanting to speed

I have been using radar detectors for over 30 years and they have saved my butt more times than I can count. I have had a Valentine and at that time is was the best there was, however that is no longer true--you can buy an Escort, Cobra, Beltronics or Whistler that is just as good--for 1/2 the $$.

Currently I have a higher end Cobra unit ($200 range) that scans 7 radar bands, 6 laser bands and the "safety alert" band used by traffic cameras. I would not drive an inch without it...

you could drive the speed limit :D
That would suck, on I-10 in the middle or nowhere between Lake City and Tallahassee at 02:00. Doing that anywhere near Daytona during rush hour would get you plowed down by a semi...

Did OP mean a detector of radar or a radio that hears the police chatter? Because a speed trap is easier to detect with a scanner, not really a radar detector. Especially since big traps usually run aircraft or timers.
Just the police chatter there's lots of late night street races like an empty drag road so a little heads up would be nice

Having an actual police scanner, in a car, is illegal in many states--though it should not be due to the communications act of 1934--but then again the Federal Government does a bunch of things that it has no Constitutional authority to do...

Might be true. Usually, it s only illegal to interfere. I would think in at least one of our 50+ states/territories, it is illegal, but to listen to free unprotected radio chatter isn't illegal.

That's my point, the 1934 Communications Act gave us (the plain ol' "regular" citizens, as opposed to the Washington elite) the right to listen to radio broadcasts on any frequency. Radar is a radio broadcast, as is police communications--that is why they are all moving to encrypted system--heaven forbid we "regular citizens" knew what the Gestapo was up to...

Ahh no kidding I HATE I-10. And driving the speed limit on I-95 from Jacksonville to Daytona is asking for it
