Hello, all. I'm kinda looking into getting a turbo after restoring my car, I just have a few questions.

If I have a stock block and internals, how much lbs could I run safely?

What's a down pipe? And why do I need a custom made... something else...

And do turbos make your mpg drop? I keep hearing different opinions on that.

10psi is limit on safe tune. A down pipe is as is the existing pipe. You need custom because that the only way to get one. Also mpg won't go down because a turbo uses the exhaust fumes

Turbo's are easier to install too than a supercharger from what I have been told although you will more than likely be using a junkyard turbo and fabbing your own parts for it as I don't think their is a turbo kit for our cars. Your going to need a bigger fuel rail and injectors too along with a stronger fuel pump. Turbo's usually can be very fuel efficient too, althought too be on the safe side I wouldn't run more the 4psi on stock internals, sure you could run 8 or 10 psi but how long is it going to last?

you can safely run 3100 pounds on your car ;) but if you're talking about boost then no more than 8 psi should be safe. A downpipe is a pipe that is mounted to the back of the turbo beginning the release of the exhaust gas out of the car. Turbos do not make you loose any mpg if anything you would gain mpg. Then again, it depends on that right foot of yours ^__^

installing a supercharger is way easier than installing a turbo, just fyi. tmaturbo.com makes turbo kits, that is where i bought mine. 325-350rwhp is about the max i would run on the stock block. people have ran more but it's not as safe. gas mileage will depend on how much you put your foot in the gas.

A turbo kit is easier to install on certain cars, but with the fitment on these supers are more straightforward.

With a GREAT tune, you could run 8-12 psi, but its the compression and power output that you want to watch out for. About 330-350 seems to be the peak of the safe power limit without forged internals. And you also have to consider will your trans and 7.5" rear hold up to that much power even?

if I was going to do it, id get a 97ish 3.8 from a junkyard, rebuild it with forged rods and pistons, upgrade the valve train, port and polish anything and everything, use stock 97 headers and flip them to face forward and fabricate my turbo manifolds off that do a twin turbo setup. Then find a stronger trans and rear, there's no sense in going through all the work to turbo or supercharge just to be held back by an oversight.. just my 2 cents..
