After having trouble getting a custom tune to stop pinging,I decided to man up and manually adjust the settings using my SCT SF3/X3tuner. I tried several tunes and allwere causing pinging at WOT when you tromp the gas right after switchinggears. For me, this was 2nd to 3rd aswell as 3rd to 4th. After changing tocopper plugs per Bama's request and making sure there was not something elsecausing this, here is what I did. I liketo be conservative, so I chose a 91 octane racing tune to start with.

I'll assume you know how to connect and get the tuner readyto flash your ECU. Once you select yourtune and continue, select YES to Adjust Additional Options. Here are the menu options.

Since my pinging occured in the area every time, I decided to try "-3" setting in the SPARK 4000 - 8000 option group. This retards the timing that Bama set in the original tune by 3 degrees in the 4000 to 8000RPM range. So far, this has worked for me.

This method of adjusting your tune would be used if you were to purchase new tires and you happened to change from 45 series to a 40 series tire. You would want to update the revs per mile number.

If you happen to upgrade your radiator and cooling fan, you might want to change when your cooling fan comes on.

I welcome opinions, questions, suggestions, examples, etc. I'd like for this to help other members with their tuning.:good:

awsome man. i am still a little dissapointed bama couldnt figure this out. but it makes perfect sense. its basically the same way we would have have adjusted put detonation if we were using a mechanical advance or just basically setting timing.

good information azure. hopefully this helps someone else out. :good:

good write up azure!!
im pretty stoked on my up coming little build.
does the sct tuner have the adjustable launch control system thing? and if so is it fairly simple to use and does it work good?

If I'm not mistaken, the IDLE SPEED NEU option group sorta works like a launch control in that you are setting your peak RPMs in neutral. So if you set this limit to 3000RPM, you can floor it and the RPMs will never exceed 3000RPM. The rev limiter would essentially be set to 3000RPM. I'm assuming that there is a sensor on the input shaft that detects forward (or backward) motion. This is a guess, there could be another method used to determine driving motion. I remember this was one of the questions you are asked when you give Bama your initial information. I believe DaBlueDude has this feature set and it has worked for him.

I noticed my initial settings are shown as "stock" for many of these options. I think Bama sets the options based on your information you give them in their program, so the ouput shows as a stock setting. For instance, my gear ratio was shown as stock, but it's 3.73. But, the speedo works fine. When I changed it to 3.73 (just to see), there was no difference in the speedo that I could tell.

A tire rev per mile calculator would help you get you revs per mile setting. I believe Tire Barn has a calc on there website, but here's one...

Tire Calculator

Here's an example from the link above...

What are the best options to adjust on ur own on the SCT tuner that you guys know?
You can do a Strategy Tune from with the tuners. This has a few more options that you can adjust. One is you can turn off the traction control, so it's off by default. All the options in this thread are present, but unfortunately, I did not see any way to advance timing.:disgust: You can only ****** timing. If they had advance timing options in the tuner, it would be perfect for users to tune the cars themselves. That would be good for maybe someone who performed an engine swap.

Your best bet would be to buy a tuner with custom tunes and make adjustments to the canned tunes that is provided with the tuner that are specific for your car.:good:

I believe you can tell Bama of your added mods and they can create new tunes for your car. You'd think they could accomodate something as popular of a mod as a supercharger. Do you have a really old tuner?

Azure,

Thanks for the feedback, this is important to us. I'm sorry to hear that we couldn't to get your tune right. Pulling some spark will definitely eliminate the pinging. I'm confident that my head tuning specialist Mike Wilson will be able to get your tune right. Shoot me over a PM with your order number included and I'll have him contact you directly.

We appreciate your patience while we get you taken care of. If you need immediate assistance. Our Bama Performance tuning specialists are here in the building Monday-Friday from 9AM-5:30PM EST and Saturday 10AM-3PM EST. You can hit them up directly at 888.226.9764 and ask for Mike.

Poor azure did the data logging along with rewriting his tune multiple times. In sure this is rare. But at least he was able to adjust the pinging out on his own.

Some of you may know this but you can ask to have the Traction Control turned OFF by default on your tune. Personally, I plan to have off for the racing tune, but enabled for the performance and street tunes.

Yes but I had bama set mine up. The launch control stufc works with the engine timing to get you off the line. Its a lot of fun but isn't the fastest way off the line. My tune from my mach is similar tweaked. 0-2000 rpm is -2, 2-4000 is -2 and 4000-8000 is -3 with 2 points richer fuel at wot. Sofar no serious pinging but I'm getting on a proper wideband monitored dyno to get some proper results on the 20th. I'm peaking at 5200rpm and that just isn't enough. Here's my graph. They're a little hard to read in pic and he didn't resize it for **** but my third pull waz 343hp and 366tq.

I love my tuner from bama it really woke my car up and gave me more power and I'm saving some fuel. I wouldn't go any other way.

It's a bit odd that am and bama didn't catch this problem..... If retarding the timing fixed it then you'd think the problem is solved.

Man, I wish you knew what has been done to that beast!:)

I didn't have to ****** timing as much as you have done. I wonder if the interal mods was throwing them off? Also, they can do a lot more tweaking than we can do with their software. Also, with that torque, I could see you having more dufficulty launching than a stock Mach1.:good:
