A buddy of mine recently bought a stock 2001 Mustang with a 3.8 V6 and an automatic transmission. He's been doing a bit of drag racing, mostly track and he shifts gear going from 1 to 2 to D. I'm concerned about the welfare of his car. Could this type of shifting result in damaging any part of his car? If you have any type of question let me know and I'll try to answer them.

someguy there is some damage mostly to the shifter itself. it wears out the contact points for the shifter and could damage the neutral safety switch as well someday.

It wont be a serious problem if he is letting off the gas as he changes gears and isn't slamming it into gear. there will be some wear but the shifting is the least of your problems if your racing in an automatic.

It might if he is over reving the engine before shifting up, I.E. redlining then sifting out, plus this would qualify as "Severe Duty use" of the vehicle. So maintenance would need to be done a lot sooner.

no wore than it shifting itself...may hurt engine if overreving.
