The gas pedal on my foxbody feels kind of sticky. When startng from a stop i cant ease into it you have to be very easy or press it down a little harder than it should be. Does anyone know what this could be?
i might have to do with your throttle body and throttle cable. last weekend i took off my throttle body to clean it up. installed new gasket, after i put it back in i noticed i had the same problem. moving from a stop feels like an on/off switch and i can't ease into the throttle like i was able to before i took it off. i will try to fix mines tomorrow and will let you how it went.
If someone mistakenly tried to adjust the idle by turning the set screw, it is possible that could be the cause of the "sticky" feeling.
Also, the bushings on the throttle shaft can become worn over time, and the shaft will not move freely.
I had to replace the throttle body on my 91 F250 a couple of years ago. It became sticky after being cleaned. I believe that the bushings are coated with Teflon. When I cleaned it the last time, I probably cleaned out the remaining 20+ year old Teflon.
You should try to diagnose whether the problem is with the cable/pedal assembly, or if it is the throttle body. Disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle body, and with the engine running, manually operate the throttle. See if you can feel any binding, or stickiness, in the throttle shaft. It should move smoothly from idle, with a small amount of resistance from the return spring.
And yes, clean the throttle body if it is dirty. As I said, you run the risk of "cleaning" the lubricating material off of the bushings, but it is one of those "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenarios.
I've heard the same thing over the years. And it is the cleaner that caused my throttle body to fail.
By all means, if you can get the throttle body clean by mechanical means (no chemical cleaner) do so!
But don't worry about using the cleaner. The coating on the throttle body is to keep the carbon from building up on it. If you need to clean the throttle body, the coating is not working anyway. And it is more important to have a relatively clean throttle body than it is to try and preserve some coating that never worked very well.
Diagnose your sticky throttle problem BEFORE you remove the throttle body for cleaning.
