I have the makin's of a custom box for the trunk. The whole box and amp will be able to fit in the right side of the trunk, leaving just enough room for groceries, etc. I have 1 Rockford Fosgate Punch Power 10" DVC brand new. I just recieved my new MTX Thunder 421D amp yesterday. It will supply the sub with about 420 watts RMS at 14.4V at 2ohms. The RF needs .65 cu.ft. for a sealed enclosure or 1.0cu.ft. for ported. I know in a convertible a ported enclosure will give me more uumph but the dimensions I originally planned on seem a little to small for a ported enclosure. Should I start all over or do you think a single 10" with that kind of power should be all of the thump I need. I am not in high school anymore so the huge bass is not what I am after. All I want is great SQ with a little more thump.

Brent, I guess my question is....would a sealed box suck that bad that the only option is a ported box? I really would have to do some custom work with fiberglass, which I pretty much won't do, so would a sealed box be the worst thing in the world? I have had every style of box you can think of and I agree that ported is louder but I don't have a problem with sealed. I kinda enjoy the "tighter" bass they produce. It just comes down to dimensions and I don't think with my current ones I can accomplish a worthwhile ported box.

if you are not looking for anything with a lot of kick then a sealed enclosure should do you fine. if you are not planning on doing alot of custom work then just get a little prefab box and role with it. i think that you should do fine.

i would go with sealed. i had a 10" fosgate puch z in a sealed box and it sounded good. i had a mtx road thunder 200 watt amp hooked to it at first, and then i had a fosgate puch 500 a2 hooke dup to it. it sounded great with both amps.

I thought it was 2.5 cubic feet for a 10'', 3.5 cubic feet for a 12'', and 5 cubic feet for a 15''?... is this sealed? I was gonna custom build my own boxes eventually, might be nice to know.

each sub is different. you'd have to build the box to the sub's specifications.

I had two 12 inch Pioneer DVC's in my car in small sealed boxes and they actually held better at low freq than in a ported box. It all depends on the speaker and how it sounds in each box...

well i will shed a little more light. your best bet is to go to a reputable stereo shop and have them do it. this is what i do for a living. if you are really serious about the sound quality and want to do it just right find someone who has the termlab program. enter the specs from your woofers and then play with the frequencies and chamber designs on the box building program until you get what you are looking for. everycar has will sound different though depending on its accoustical ability. sealed enclosures will usually offer you a nice tight bass response but may not produce much sound pressure.

you can do a search for it online and you should find it with no problem. you can also just do a search on wayne harris and you will find something on termlab,termpro,termpack... it is all part of the program. it is a pricey program though but well worth it.

hey i just noticed something else. you said that the amp was rated at 420w @14.4v in 2ohm. well this is just fyi but i thought you may want to know that your electrical system will never produce 14.4v unless you do some serious upgrades. the best way to find the output of the amp is to take the fuse rating(ie...60amps) x power(12 volts) ,minus the opposite of the efficiency rating (ie....60%efficiency is 40% subtracted) = 432watts.

HEY, I can use my Electricity course for something .... P=IV.... V=IR, so 420 Watts = 14.4 volts times I, which is V/R, so you get... 420 Watts = 14.4 Volts times 14.4 Volts times Resistance in Ohms. I get 414.7 Watts, rouned to 420 I guess. Now, let's use the 414.7 Watts to see what you're looking at for 12 Volts. x Watts = 12 volts times 12 volts times 2 ohms.... you're lookin' at 288 Watts. Using my electricity rules, and assuming the sub is the resistor of 2 ohms in a series circuit.... that's what I get. You see such a decrease because it's the voltage squared that gives you power.
