Speaking of springs, what is your opinions on progressive rates. Seems to be all that's out there, and from what I've been told progressives are garbage.
You've been misinformed...
Linear springs are ideal in some ways, particularly the ability to match shock valving to spring rate throughout the entire range of suspension movement, HOWEVER, this is really only a necessity on full-on racing vehicles.
Progressive springs are by far the more common choice for road-going street vehicles, because they provide the ability to have a softer rate for initial compression allowing for a smooth ride on smooth(ish) roads, then a stiffer rate for further compression when you either encounter a not-so-smooth section of road, or load the suspension in performance maneuvers. The downside is that the shock valving doesn't perfectly match the spring rate throughout suspension travel, but honestly we don't get that level of perfection on street cars anyway.
In short, anyone who tells you 'Linear is king and Progressives are garbage' has a little book knowledge, and no real world experience. Or, they live only at the racetrack and don't care about street driving...
