275 is fine
275 on an 8.5 inch wheel is not "fine". It will fit but barely (for most brands). The sidewall will bulge and the car loses a lot of needed handling ability.

The recommended size for an 8.5 wheel is 255, generally 265 is already pushing it.

So it will fit but with some trade offs. Again, tire brand will differ a bit in actually fitment.

275/45 would be OK. I personally would not do 275/40. That is too little of sidewall for an 8.5" wheel. I have seen the sidewall of a 40 series tire shredded on that exact wheel.

If you want a taller tire you can go with a 265/50. I know nitto makes that size in their nt555 series.

OP,

I would stay on the safe side of things and run a 255 or 265. A 265 is pushing it, let alone a 275. Of course, all of them have been done before, too. IMO, it's best to run the correct size rim the tire is designed for.

OP....here is my suggestion. Compile a list of the tire sizes you are interested in buying and their manufacturers. Then go down the list and call each manufacturer and ask them if that size will work for your wheel. That way you are getting accurate information directly from the source of the product.

I went through this same thing with tire sizes for 6 months and I will tell you that all of the forums, not just ME, are full of misleading information regarding "safe or approved" tire sizes for specific wheel sizes. After all was said and done I have 275/50-17 on 8" wide wheels on the rear and it is absolutely fine. Not one problem and they ride and handle great for daily driving.

Just my $.02.....

What? Not at all. Why does ford run a 235 on the 8" rim? Because their team of engineers has decided that its the best and safest on an 8" rim. Most manufacturers won't run a 275 on anything less than a 9.5" wheel. Of course it can be done but like borii said you will have tons of sidewall bulge and flex.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. And just because others have done it doesn't make it smart or safe.

As far as a 275/50 on an 8.5" wheel, that's a little different. But people running a tire like that are usually running some sort of wrinkle walls and you want more sidewall and tread contact. I still would not recommend a 275 on an 8.5" wheel for a DD

Not sure where you're getting this info or which tire brand you're proposing, but most 275's require a minimum of a 9" rim. Here's the specs right off of Nitto's website for their NT555 in a 275/40/18 or 275/35/18 or 275/40/17. They recommend a 9.5" rim for best fitment, but "Okay" as small as a 9" for this particular tire.

Op never said he wanted a 35 or 40 tire


And a 275/50 is a minimal of 8"
275/45 is a minimal of 8.5"

OP, I will make this easy. Here are choices for a wider rear tire:

275/45-18 (0.5" taller, 1.75" wider)
265/50-18 (1" taller, 1.25" wider)
255/45-18 (same height as front, 0.75" wider)

I will tell you that a 275 or 265 have very limited and very expensive choices. A 255 will be more common and cheaper.

Also, if you use a taller choice it will look great but will not handle as well as a lower profile tire. Now that does not mean it will cause a problem driving normally but if you auto crossing I would not use a taller tire. But everyday driving and straight line it is not a problem at all.

Sorry for the delayed reply! I came down with a harsh sickness last Wednesday and today was my first day back at AM.

The reason I never posted a 275/50/18 or a 275/45/18 is because they're not a practical nor a beneficial sized tire for the OP's Mustang. Using such a tall tire will change the drivetrain ratio of his Mustang and significantly slow down its acceleration. The 275/50/18 is 28.83" tall tire, while the 275/40/18 is only a 26.66" (similar to stock). Keeping the factory tire height will not require recalibration of the speedometer, like the 275/50 or 275/45 would. Those tires were not designed to be mounted on a Mustang, but something closer to a sporty SUV.

I'm sorry if I initially came off harsh, that wasn't my intention! I just wanted to point the OP in the right direction with safety and efficiency in mind. Please let me know if either you have any other questions. I'd be happy to answer them!
