When I take my tires to the shop to be mounted and balanced, will it be possible for them to switch the tpms from my stock wheel to the new ones?

I would certainly think so.
You'd be looking at added cost to break down, and I assume remount, your stock tires. This would be added cost vs. buying new sensors off eBay. You may want to do a quick comparison.

yes, but if your old rim/tire setup is still good I'd buy new ones. Or do what I do with my 2nd set that did not come with them and cover the light with tape.

I might just run without them. Will the tire shop install wheels that don't have them?

Interesting question. My shop indicated to me that they cannot mount tires on a car without sensors (if the car came with them) however they will mount tires on wheels without them since they don't know what car they will be mounted on. Some crazy law.

idk but agree with Rob. It will depend on shop. If you just bring the 4 tires and rims I don't see why not. If they are on a car who knows. I have been told by shops that they couldn't patch my tire because of where the hole was (and this is a shop that free patched a tire for me b4)

Well what do you guys advise? Is getting new tmps worth it?

I'm cheap....if it cost more than $50 no.

On my 2nd set of rims I looked for a while and subtracted $100 from the price I was willing to spend if they didn't have them. You have to put a piece of tape on the idiot tpms light and each time you start the car you'll have to hit reset on the msg center (and once in a while randomly)

this is assuming you'll check tire pressure at least once a month

The ones on eBay are about $50. I'd probably check my tire pressure though

My 2013 Mustang has aftermarket wheels with brand new sensors that were
put on two years ago and I hadn't bothered to check the tire pressure since and recently
discovered that they only had 20 psi in them, yet I never received any warning from the dash that they were low. On my wife's 2010 Camaro, the warning light trips at 29 psi. Does Ford warn you when the pressure is zero, or is there something wrong with my car?

You have to drive a certain amount of miles, for the car to warn you its low. Also it depends what tire pressure you programmed it to be at. We have a 07 Avalanche and on the truck, it tells you what's the exact tire pressure on each tire. I don't know if the premium cluster has that feature.

It's generally set at +/-25% .
For example, if tire pressure is suppose to be 32 psi, an 8 to 9 psi drop (23 psi) should trigger them.
EDIT: BTW...The TMPS is not meant to be a substitute for checking your air pressure manually. Or so they say.
Then they shouldn't make them a requirement for inspections, is the way I see it. But that's another subject.

No one has mentioned this, but when taking old tpms sensors and putting them in a new tire, they are going to have to rebuild the seals/grommets to prevent future leaks. I got quoted $15 per sensor to rebuild plus another $15 per wheel to rebalance. So you're looking at $120 to have them transferred when you can buy new ones for about $150ish

Wow that's interesting. Sounds like new ones are definitely the way to go.
