Hey guys. I just got my first car. Its an 83 5.0. I put a different 302 in it and a tremec 5 speed from a 88 gt in the car. The car i got the trans from had been rolled 3 times. Anyways, as soon as i put the car into 3rd gear, i heard a whine/howl that sounds like its coming from the trans. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be and how to fix it on a low high school budget!

And its a bit of a pain to get it into reverse. Is the reverse thing normal with tremec's?

Sounds like it could be a bearing and with the reverse problem try putting it into second and then reverse and it sometimes it will go in easier

Pretty sure they call for synchromesh, it's made by GM. My Tremec 3550 called for that. They are much more mechanical feeling V. a T5.
Not synchromesh, the t5 calls for dex/merc AT fluid. I got a warning label with mine that use of synchromesh would cause damage and void the warranty.

I have a rebuilt t5z out of a 95 cobra and pro 5.0 short throw and use valvoline max-life ATF fluid and I don't have any issues or whine in any gear!!

Ya but thats a newer transmission. Possibly tremec made some upgrades to prevent the whine with a short throw shifter?

That's true and my Trans doesn't have many miles on it and I put hardened gears and stronger synchros in it! I would agree with previous suggestions change the Trans fluid and see if that helps

Ive also heard from my dad that it could possibly be my syncros? Is that a possibility?

If it whines in gear then it is not your synchros. Synchronizers are only used when shifting from gear to gear. If it shifts up and down through the gears smoothly your synchros are fine. If you have difficulty shifting from gear to gear or have grinding issues then you may have a bad synchro or bent shift fork.

About shifting problems it could also be that your clutch may not be disengaging all the way
