let's say I hypothetically had a friend, just one, and that friend had purchased a v-8 Mustang GT.... let's say I paid my hypothetical friend off and he agreed to let me swap engines with him. First, is this possible? Second, what all would I have to change to make this swap work. I mean short term, long term... no breakage anywhere. If I'm running drags, I don't want to have breaks. I'm aware it would be a huge undertaking, and I'm also aware it's something I would be quite interested in doing... and the insurance company still would think it's a v-6.... which is even better for me.... thank you for your replies.

Yes, basically you gut the entire engine compartment and put everything out of a wrecked GT in there, you change all the wiring, the complete drive train including transmision, driveshaft, and rear end, the computer of course and about everything else you can think of.

****, if you're gonna swap engines, you might as well just trade cars. it'd be a LOT less hassle

but if you're doing this as a project *shudders* then it's not just the engine you'd have to swap, but also the a/c, the engine and wiring harnesses, the tranny, a whole load of stuff

i guess having a v8 with v6 insurance just doesn't seem to be worth it after all the effort involved

it will cost you more money than you can imagine to do the swap. you would need things such as:
engine
accessories
tranny to bolt up (if was a manual tranny and you have auto, etc)
rear end
wiring harnesses
injectors
fuel rail
computer
either ignition or reporgrammed PATS system
custom tune
k-member
engine mounts
and still some more

i'd say screw the GT engine and go with the 351 motor. i knew a guy that put a 351 in his v-6 mustang and it really fills up the engine bay.

Ok which GT engine?5.0 or 4.6?

This will make a world of difference.If the 4.6 go trade it will be less trouble but if it a 5.0 it can be done in a weeken if you go carbed.If you really plan on dragging it go carbed its easy to tune and considerably cheaper.

In the case you go the carbewd 5.0 route you will need a 4 barrel carb and intake,either an aftermarket distributor or the duraspark 2 distributor and ignition module,and thats it.

I have done a 5.0 EFI swap and let me tell you its not for the novice!Its a pain in the ass and very time consuming.But can be done.There are diagrams for wiring it up if you choose EFI.But i highly suggest carb.

And in case you get any replies of "A CARB ISNT AS RELIABLE AS EFI" thats not true its all in the tune.My mustang will and has fired up when it was as low as 5 degrees out and idles like a champ.

a carbed motor is easier to do, but you still have to worry about the stock computer and you still need to get an 8.8 rear end instead of the stock 7.5 rear. the v6 rear end is too weak to put up with a 5.0 constantly.

plus w/ the computer, they have an electronic ignition and not a distributer like the 5.0s, so the computer would have to be completly changed still to accept a carbed motor. you would still need the new k-member and motor mounts because anything 96+ uses the modular 4.6 k-member so he would need a 94 or 95 k-member with the motor mounts on it (and new motor mounts if the old ones are shot which they prolly are)

a stock 5.0 will run fine with a 7.5.... it if you decide to put heads on and a cam and launch it at the track that you need to worry... its a great idea to sway but teh 7.5 will work fine for a bit if you dont take it to the track until you can afford to buy an 8.8 to rag on.

the 79-~86 (?) foxes had 7.5's. however the 5.0's output for those years were only 140 up to 200 hp/250ft lbs (correct me if i'm wrong).
