If I recall correctly v8 mustangs cats are bolted on while the v6 is welded on is there a reason for the difference. Also correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the v8 version is bolted on.

My personal guess is the factory backed racing efforts don't have to have a custom piece made, they can just unbolt the factory cats, whereas there is no v6 factory backed effort.

The new GT has welded cats as well, but the GT350 is the new factory backed effort (as opposed to the Boss 302 of the S197 platform) and has a mid pipe that can be unbolted for easy installation for an O/R mid pipe. That is my guess at least.

Interesting. I would think welding would be more expensive for a manufacturing line to produce but I guess it would be more durable than clamps. I wish they had made them clamp on for the v6 it would be so much easier to go catless and to go back from catless to catted when doing emissions tests (doesn't really concern me but still)

Welding is dirt cheap, especially because the ease of automation. For a bolt on affair, there's what, 10 bolts bolts, 10 nuts, and 2 flanges that have to be taken into account (cost of parts), and then the machinery for installing bolts and torquing them is more complex than just running a seam weld around a butt joint.

I agree that sucks, but if you really wanted to you could have a local garage or exhaust specialist fabricate you a flanges to swap back and forth. Is it worth it? Depends but it is possible and I wouldn't think it cost that much.. I never knew that so thanks for bringing it up.. Good Luck
