I need to know what motor came stock in a 1985 mustang conv,? I have a motor that i was told came out of that but i need to be sure because i need parts. its a 302 and the castings are E5AE??? Let me knowww pleasee
If the car came from the factory with an automatic transmission it will have had CFI (carburator with injectors in it) and still retained a flat-tappet, iron, High Output camshaft profile.
If the car came from the factory with a five speed transmission it will be a non-CFI (carburated, no injectors within) engine and is the first year of the hydraulic roller camshaft which is steel. This cam uses roller-tipped lifters and a steel distributor gear.
So, to know specifically what you have you need to know which transmission the car came with OR you can just remove the intake completely and look to see if there's a "spider" with "dogbones" in the lifter valley that hold the lifters in place. The spider is held in by 2 small bolts that thread into the center of the block. There will not be a spider or dogbones in the CFI engine.
That could be the stock engine - the 302 was available in the '85 Mustang, and apparently E5AE refers to an '85 engine. If you can, check the left rear of the engine block - there may be a VIN there that, if it's the original engine, will match with your car's VIN.
