I bought my '02 GT in January and need to change the oil this weekend. I've search threads looking to see what oil the 99-04 owners use and cant find a thread. So, any recommendations on conventional of synthetic or a blend? Also, viscosity? Thanks.

I use Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-20. Kind of depends on what you like. A lot of people use royal purple I have noticed but I don't think it's going to make a huge difference what brand you use. Just try and use full synthetic. I'm sure a ton more people will chime in as well.

I run 5w-30 valvoline in my v6 and VR-1 5w-30 will be in my DOHC swap car. Was going to go royal purple but I can get the vr stuff cheaper :headbang:

Valvoline doesn't actually sell synthetic oil, they use a loophole to market it that way though and you'd never know from the prices!
Good to know! Thank you.
I always use Mobil 1 full synthetic 5W-20 when I can afford it, otherwise I just use Motorcraft 5W-20.
Definitely use Motorcraft filters though; do NOT use Fram. SVTPerformance did a filter test and the Fram was one of, if not, the worst performer. I don't recall exactly, sorry.

I have always used havoline 10W-40, just like my dad did. I live in Mississippi where the summers are pretty hot. Is there any problem with a 5W-20 in the summer heat? I think it's interesting that the oil filler cap states 5W-20.

Valvoline does not make a VR-1 Dino or synthetic 5w-30 only a 10w-30. I used the 10w-30 regular VR-1 for 1000 miles for break in on my new teksid block. The VR-1 is great for break in due to high zinc content. You are not suppose to use the VR-1 if you have catalytic converters because it will clog them. I would highly recommend using using Royal Purple HPS 5w-30. I put this in after break in and it was amazing how much smoother the engine is. The RP HPS is also recommended for cars with no cats due to its high zinc and phosphorus content. It's really awesome stuff. I figured when I have over 15k in my engine alone good oil is only insurance.

the reason for the thinner oil is because after 2000 ford built their engines with some tighter tolerances and thicker oil sometimes has some problems making its way through the journals and such in the engine. im in cali atm and its gets around 115 or so and i still run the 5-20 synthetic with k&n without any issues

Reasoning for that is the fram doesnt have the anti-drain back valve, which is needed for our engines..any filter that has that valve will do the job but I agree I always stick to motorcraft, they are MADE for our cars

NAPA has really good filters too, I forget who makes them

10+$ for 1 quart of oil sucks but its good for the engine and I rather preserve the engine and treat it right than have to go back a replace my forged internals
I always use penzoil platinum ( full synthetic ) in all my vehicles I used to use mobil 1 but it does not say FULL SYNTHETIC on the bottle like penzoil platinum does not sure why , perhaps it is not full synthetic after all , penzoil is good , I also use a filter that is designed for synthetic oils ( K&N).
