here's the best way to time any car from 1984 on back and a few newer one to.

do total time, not initial, older motors and if the cam or anything else has been changed initial isn't going to get it right for you,
so you want to do total time
and you want
38degrees of total timing @ 3000rpm for a stock motor
36degrees of total timing @ 3000rpm for a motor with a cam

4 cyl auto - 20 degrees
4 cyl stick - 6 degrees
6 cyl auto - 12 degrees
6 cyl stick - 10 degrees
8 cyl auto - 6 degrees
8 cyl stick - 12 degrees

This is for stock engines, you may need to back it off a degree or 2 for today's low octane gas.

4, 6, or 8 set them all to 10 degrees, don't forget to disconnect the vacuum advance when hooking up the timing light. if you get any pinging, set it back to 6 or 7 degreesbb
