I want to spend all this Christmas cash and I have decided on getting some 4:10s for my 1987 GT automatic. But what do I need exactly? I know I need the gears them self, but do I need a kit to install them? I really want to do it my self so I know how. I would also get the speedo gear thing so it would be right. Do I need a tuner or anything? If I do then gears are out.

It would be nice if one of the AM guys chimed it.

A lot of people here who are big in DIY, people who can take apart their engines and put them back together say that they will never touch gears. They are that type of thing where you should get it done professionally. A good price for gears is $500 total for gears and install, give or take depending on your area. And you will need to calibrate your speedometer if you get gears, a tuner will help that. Or you can get a speedometer calibrator. You can go without the calibrator but you will have to know when to shift and know how far off your speedometer is.

If you buy your gears from American Muscle their is a drop down tab when you pick your gear where you can select an install kit. I dont know very many people who have done it themselves. Its definitely recommended you have a shop do it

When I did my gears I bought the install kit also, think it was $85 for the kit. Took the guy an hour and half to install them at the ford dealer.

For everything gears, install kit, and dealership labor was $450

If you are buying 4.10 gears and having it installed by a shop do you need the install kit? It's not going to be a ford dealership but all dealerships should have same tools lol
