I have a equus product inc. model 6086 Tachometer that I put in a 66 mustang. It works for the most part but when I'm starting from a complete stop, the tach needle bounces all over. I was wondering if this was because i don't have a resistor. If it is the resistor, what resistor do you recomend. (specifications). Thanks you for your help.

I am guessing you are using the "Option #1 - Direct hookup with GREEN wire." (Source) That is the best choice in my opinion. The manual doesn't mention using a resistor, but section 6 (Troubleshooting) does note that if you have erratic indications the green wire should be routed away from other wires. Trial and error is okay for determining what part of the route is at fault (if any).

My own experience is that direct connected tachs are sensitive to the condition of the points. A short session with a point file could make life good again. If still no good, a new condenser might help.
