that seems a little retarded to me since it will go around 155 with the limiter on which is way above any speedlimit in the US so why not just leave it off. i bet it go around 180 if it was off. Does any1 know if it easy to take off or does it effect other parts that make the car run?

for a few reaons. first the shelby gt500 is a highend car, therefor it is set at 155 so it can be claimed in the highend of sports cars. second the speed limiter is set so you wont over rev the engine or out gear the transmission. the third reason is ford can and has been sued for making cars to fast to be stable and for the idiot under me there was no way to put a speed limiter on a boss 302 or boss 429 those were carbeated engines and if you send your computer to a place like fast chips they can take out the speed limiter

They're all the same, hoss. It has nothing to do with the mustang itself, or any of the other 50 cars that shut off at 155mph. All the really high-powered street cars are using that figure these days. It's really 250 kph that they're using, which is a nice even figure.

When they first started using speed limiters, they tended to stick to the limitations of the tires. V tires are good for 149 mph. The Z rated tire runs out of rating at "over" 149 mph without saying how far over.

The Mustang chassis is quite primitive, and it doesn't really have any business at 155 mph anywhere.

josh w answered the question just about perfectly, he hit all the points. Like he said, you can go to a shop to have the limiter removed, or if you buy something like a SCT tuner for you car it will automatically remove the limiter. This is the best way to do it, go to a modification shop that specializes in stangs and buy a SCT tuner and have them put your car on the dyno and do a custom tune for it.

P.S. When saying Josh W answered the answer correctly, I am refering to the answer given on the Shelby gt 500, I do not know much about older mustangs and have no idea who is correct about speed limiters on the older mustangs but I would tend to agree with Josh because like he said, the older cars had carbs and not fuel injection with computers, so im not sure how they would put a speed limiter on them.

JoshW needs to get his facts straight before he starts name calling. He apparently has no knowledge of classic mustangs. The Boss Mustangs did indeed have rev limiters on them.

All American cars are speed limited, it is the law.... but I see your point, with speed limits of 70-75 max in the united states, why have a car that can go 155mph? Not very safe and responsible to go 155 on a highway that is 55...... if it had no limiter it probably could hit 180.....

Tire constraints, aerodynamics, SAFETY, you name it.

By the way the car will never do180 mph. Motor trend did a comparison on claimed speeds and actual speeds the Z06 505hp Corvette only did 173 mph and that car has the aerodynamics to that the Shelby lacks.

Horsepower does not mean top speed.

Probably to keep it under the safe limits of other parts or the car like tires, springs, or other things in the drivetrain. They can put components that will handle perfect under normal driving conditions, but under extreme driving conditions may break.

I think it was a tire liability issue, the factory equipped tires are high performance and speed rated, but not racing tires. So the tire speed rating is used for the computer set speed limits.

So if you want to go racing you have to buy some racing tires and then get your computer re-programed

So some moron won't over rev it and kill the motor, and then go back and claim a new engine from Ford under warranty. They used rev limiters back on some of the classic Mustangs too, like the Boss 302.
