Will for damn sure be upgrading tomorrow. Fresh wipe and install Win10 Pro from the .iso I burnt tonight from the Microsoft website. Totally free for those who did not know. I recommend doing a clean wipe/install whenever doing a system upgrade and the Win10 Pro gets you bitlocker along with a few other worthwhile things.

I only went to Win8.1 myself for performance over 7 when gaming. 7 is still on my laptop and we still use it at work. I will be putting EVERYTHING on 10 though. Higher performance, and the biggie is DirectX 12 support which even 8.1 will not have.

Also going from 16 to 32 gigs of RAM on the gaming PC and going to try pull the case apart and clean everything out and then see how good the auto overclock feature on my newish motherboard is. Been running all 6 cores at 3.5ghz (up from 2.8ghz) on the auto feature for a few months now. Going to kick it up to 4.0ghz x6 and see what happens.

So... hold off on the 3000 series and wait a bit for the guinea pigs to sort it or what? I'm already at the point where if the game doesn't support crossfire I have to kick the graphics down to med-high. Which still looks spectacular on this Ultrawide at 90hz but... I'm getting the new MS Flight Simulator as soon as I get finished moving in and my rig set back up. Currently using my wife's office PC which is a FX6300 and some old HD7870 lol. Still can run Civ6 at med graphics at 1080p but the machine becomes a freaking space heater lol.

Anyway, my rig has the Ryzen 5 3600 and super fast RAM and a 2TB NVME drive so all I'm missing is a top tier graphics card... Been waiting to upgrade for awhile now lol. Should I wait for a used 2080ti?
I would hold off on the 3000 series unless you want to turn around and sell it for a profit... assuming you can get your hands on one. I contacted all of my suppliers and I have 3 3090's ordered but its likely I won't get any. I think the upcoming AMD card will be very competitive with the 3080.

That said, if you can find one and are ready to move on it, do it. Just don't pay inflated prices. I've already seen the 3080's being pre-ordered and marked up over $850. MSRP is $700.
I think the 3070s are gonna be MSRP $500 but who knows... yeah prices might be jacked... ugh.
hey @scottydsntknow

ok, so, a few months ago, our hospital upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but we have both installed?
Just wondering how come?

If those pictures are from the same system, it is possible that the software in the first picture says Windows 7 because Windows 7, 8 and 10 all share the same basic code. Meaning the software likely looks for a Windows version and if it's above version 6.1 it is Windows 7 or newer. So .. Vista was Widows 6.0, Win 7 was 6.1, Win 8 was 6.2, Win 8.1 was 6.3 and Windows 10 is 10.0.

To find out what version it is pulling, assuming you have access to it, click on start and on Win 7 click run, on anything newer, just type in run then select the run command. Then just type in "winver" without the quotes.

It will show you the version number and the build number.

A lot of software functions this way.

i just never knew that was a thing to have 2 OS's

i was telling someone that we upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago at work,
then i was like, "...wait... on the desktop, it still says Windows 7 & still has the Windows 7 desktop wallpaper..." haha

i was just wondering what was going on

Ok tried to order a 3070 or 3080 but they sold out like... before I could even checkout lmao.... so I dunno. I guess I wait. Maybe I'll see what the used market is like for a 2080ti... I'm sure it'll be some stupid price... the good news is Elite Dangerous and Civ6 support crossfire still lol.

In the first picture, you can see where it says "Microsoft Windows Version 10.0.16299.2166, that means this system is Windows 10 and I figured the IT nerds would have the command prompt and all that fun stuff locked out.

As for the Windows 7 but really 10, that is just your IT people being lazy.

And yes ...................................... Apple would do such things except much, much worse.

I was unable to get any RTX 3000 cards and was told that they are not looking good for anytime soon. I ordered 10 - 3080 and 3090 each and received nothing. My supplier, who works directly with Nvidia, EVGA, Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Zotac , etc.. all said the same thing. They don't have any chips to send out and the ones they do get, 1/3 - 1/2 are defective. My supplier had ordered over 40,000 RTX 3000 cards and received less than 700. These cards simply don't exist because as I mentioned, Nvidia tried to stiff arm TSMC into getting a better deal by saying they were going to go with Samsung to manufacture the chips, they weren't expecting TSMC to not budge. So then they got stuck using Samsung and had to redesign the 3000 series last minute to get it to work on Samsung 8nm process. That combined with AMD 6000 series packing the goods, Nvidia is in a tight spot for a while.

Apple would never do that to me...
If only you knew what Apple has done..

About 10 years ago when I worked for IBM, I had the opportunity to go to both Cupertino, California and the former Austin, Texas, Apple HQs. I had the opportunity to sit down with their engineers and software developers and the things they were talking about as far as invasion of privacy and the sheer amount of personal data they collect on all of their users has convinced me to never own an Apple product in my life. Not that Google doesn't do the same thing with android, but I saw what they were capable of and it was enough for me to nope them forever.

If someone wanted to track you or anyone, they had NO problem doing it, I'm sure.
So liek... literally 0 good cards are available... I want to get some newer games and none of them support multi gpu nor should they... so... yeah I guess I'll just wait with my junk in my hand hopefully some stock of AMD or Nvidia cards in March?
Getting any current or last gen GPU for a decent price is impossible at the moment. It's nearly the same for AMD Ryzen CPUs. Finding a 5000 series is practically impossible unless you have a Microcenter nearby.

All these cards and CPUs are getting sniped by bots before anyone has a chance to buy one.
Any potential updates on possibility of getting one of the hot new cards or a "viable alternative"? No idea what that would even be... I'm pretty much bottlenecked on my rig now for anything new which sucks lol. Elite Dangerous and GTA5 still kick ass tho... Honestly I've been playing a lot of Civ or other games on the family computer up stairs with the R9 290 and Ryzen 5 1600... During the week anyway... At 1080p it runs anything...
Not really. Nvidia is bringing old cards out of retirement because they simply cannot get enough good chips produced. They have said to expect until Q3 of this year before they get things under control.

As for AMD, F knows. Their CPUs are top priority and they can't make enough of them to even get them to market. OEMs are snagging them up, same with their GPUs.

If I had to guess, late summer at the earliest in finding anything in stock anywhere.

So basically, Q3 for everything. As you know, used CPU and GPU prices are crazy too. So look in classifieds for old parts to upgrade, other than that, get lucky and constantly spam all the big online retailers to see if they are in stock.
Figures... I'll just keep on with the dual Furies till Q3... Any suggestion on what card to get when/if they become available? Thinking a 3080 but who knows.
Assuming you can get a card for MSRP, 3080 or 6800XT.

Realistically, any of the new cards (5600 - 6900 on AMD and RTX 2xxx/3xxx) would be a massive upgrade over the Furies, especially since Crossfire and SLI are both officially dead according to AMD and Nvidia.
Oof there is a PNY 3080 in stock for $1k... can't do it...
Edit... PCPartpicker needs to update faster lol. Either it was just in stock or I dunno... I probably was in stock 15 minutes ago lol.
