Prob the breather valve. Mine did the same thing. There is a revised part. No sweat.

my dad actually got under and felt it (bc he can fit under it easier than i can without ramps lol) and he said it felt like the differential was wet, along with the exhaust pipes around it.

so i wonder if it's splashing all around or if it's sometihng else.

on another forum, someone said it was the rear diff. leak at pinion seal

 

i just took some pics...it's not the same area leaking that i've seen on other peoples with the breather valve problem. it's the entire bottom of the differential, and on the exhaust. check it out:

the axle looks bone dry, where other peoples were wet on the drivers side

also, god the bottom of this car is disgustingly rusted lol.

 

If it's the pinion seal, there will probably be a line of cast-off oil on the exhaust pipes and underside of the car (basically lining up with the pinion flange area).

My car had that and the dealer "fixed" it, but messed up (probably didn't torque the pinion nut correctly), that the bearings crapped out and I needed a full rebuild within a few months. So, I would encourage you to have the service dept. guarantee that a rear end specialist does the work to save you hassle down the road.

I never intend to hurt feelings, but so what if i do, or i did here in this case-
I would also ask that a dumb *** not touch my differential. Seriously.
As of now, I trust ONE human being to get close to mine. If he fell ill, or off a cliff, I would keep toppin it off once a week for ever. :shock:
But, seriously, should be a quick fix, done by lunch.

ugh jesus. so what do I tell them? I'm going to call to make the appointment and drop it off on a Sunday night for Monday most likely. what exactly do i say or write? I can leave a note when i drop off the key.

Just ask the service writer if they have a rear end specialist that can do the work and have him note it on the service order. He could of course lie to you, but at least it should be documented in case they fudge something up. It might also be worth having Deysha with Ford Customer Service elevate the issue to the regional manager (she posts on other Mustang fora, but I don't think she is on ME).

 

If your rear is leaking, may want to go see a doctor....just saying...

 

That's definitely the pinion seal and not the common breather on the driver's side.

 

Yeah with that pic it's obvious you have a leak from the front

 

Yes, looks like the pinion seal. I just had the exact same prob on mine. It was the perfect time to upgrade my gears(3.73) and have all the bearing and seals done. Looks like urs is definitely from the front and goes back so most likely pinion seal. Sorry bro...

someone who knows what he is doing and has the proper tools to torque the new crush sleeve about a 45 min job about two hrs if replace bearings if remember correctly re torque to 250 ft lbs. Suggest they replace bearings on penion shaft at same time,never saw a seal leak that wasn't caused by bearing wear!

 

My 14 had the same pinion seal leak and it was replaced under warranty, at the time my car had 7800 miles and it now has 9800 miles. I talked with the mechanic and he showed me the old pinion seal...which is plastic...he put in a revised seal which is metal......haven't had any issues in 2000 miles of hard driving.

if it's a breather valve issue, then is it too much pressure inside causing this? This is the same 8.8 rear end ford has been using for years. I have 160k miles on mine and nothing's leaked. How are your newer cars leaking this much?

also if you have a leak and a whine, top it off. should be 75w140 synthetic with limited slip.

or do you guys have a 7.5 inch axle? in which case, 75w90 i believe. I forgot what year the v6 changed over to 8.8 rear end.

 

Would upgrading the differential cover help compare to the oem cover? Like the steeda diff cover. Just curious..

it would look better and if it's made in America it would help the economy.

 

A couple of other advantages of a billet aluminum girdle are: (1) have a drain hole built in, so no need to crack the cover to change fluid and (2) the girdle theoretically strengthens the whole housing and has studs to keep the carrier bearing caps in place...looks nice but may not add much given the power levels of the V6.

I hate dealerships, the one in my town always BS's me like this

 

according to the paper i got, it says

"customer states rear differential leaking bottom differential wet, maybe bad pinion seal leaking."

"VERIFIED concern found pinion seal leaking. ordered seal"

under it says SEAL ASY - OIL 1 W BR3Z4676A

also says performed free multi point inspection


i didn't wanna leave it there for them to get it Friday then install it Friday, only because I've got plans for a 4 day weekend this weekend, so I need the car. the service manager said it'd be better if I just picked it up anyway, then when he gets the part, schedule the fix for next week. he suggested monday, but that's part of the weekend I need the car, so I said Thurs and he said that's fine. hopefully it'll be a quick 1-day fix.

also inquired about airbag recall..he said they don't even have any of the parts for it, so he couldn't do it for me. worth a shot though! lol

a day, hopefully. he had to order the part. and i guess shipping to the dealer from wherever they get it will take about 3-5 days.

They could have a warehouse somewhere or something. Some parts do get special ordered if they are out of the norm. Like the head shield for under the hood. Locally they have to order that from out of the city.

 

They probably can and did get the part next day, but couldn't get you worked on until the date they gave you. So they just tell you oh we can't get the part until... And this way you bring the car when they have the time. They probably have one guy who will do this job. That's my guess. But I'd rather they did that then take my car and not touch it for a week. I've had people do that before.
