I have a 96 Mustang with a T5 5 speed manual tranny. When I shift into 5th it is like shifting into neutral. It doesn't have a 5th gear. What can cause this and should I just replace the trans.

If my memory serves me correctly the reverse gear and OD/5th gear are on the same shaft. Does the car go into and drive in reverse? If it does I think ur OD gear is probably bad. If not then the shaft or assembly for that gear set May be at fault. From the sounds of it ur sun rose are good as it allows u to put it in OD how ever u might check those too.
